Firestation review
Melton's fire station could go full time after a review of the service across the county but chiefs are pleased with recent performances.
Several major blazes and a serious car crash have been dealt with excellently in recent months but calls have been made to make it a permanent rather than retained station.
Allison Cowley, from Old Dalby, said: "While wanting to add my appreciation of the local fire fighters to all those that are currently being voiced, I am concerned Melton is reliant on retained fire fighters rather than a permanent staff.
"Surely the time has come to acknowledge the fantastic work of the retained fire fighters by campaigning for a permanent, full time cover. After all, what has Oakham got that we haven't?"
But fire chiefs said the current level of support was more than adequate.
Peter Roffey, Chairman of the Combined Fire Authority, said: "I feel the recent spate of serious fires and road traffic collisions to which Melton appliances have been committed as first response have shown they have performed well.
"Whether or not the fire fighters were retained or full time would have been unlikely to make a difference to the outcome of these incidents.
"I think we should be very proud of the commitment the Melton retained fire fighters give to our community and congratulate them on a job demonstrably well done."
The northern area sector of Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service is currently under review to establish if changes need to be made to where the stations are, distribution of appliances and how they are crewed.
The Chief Fire and Rescue Officer Dave Webb will consider the information and make recommendations at the end of the year.
